LOVE is the key

Iris relief

I know we posted on this blog a while ago that a team from Iris relief was coming to Sendai to work with us...

...well, the 1st reponse team came and left, and then the 2nd response team came and we hosted them as well, and now they have left.
But what can I say??? Wow.

The connection with them was just so... God! We always loved Mike and Rachel and the church at Sano Revival Center. And through them the Iris team came. We could not have had any better match or greater success. It was so great hosting them and working with them.
The love for Jesus, what is in our hearts, our DNA so to speak, amazingly was so similar, and they were truly a blessing and an encouragement to us too.

Both the 1st and 2nd team were here for about 10 days each.
We visited several shelters and tsunami affected areas, from Watari in the south of Sendai and Ofunato in the north in Iwate.
The team was called the JOY SHIP. They literally carried so much joy and brought so much fun, smiles, laughter and LOVE.

Through these teams, we have even lost exact count of how many people received prayer, experienced healing, and received Jesus!! They even met and touched hearts of our personal friends, English students, owner couples of our favorite cafes, as well as everyone in the church.
They were all affected by their joy culture.

So I know I am extreme (since I hadn't updated any articles for so long), but I am going to try and mention some of the highlights from hosting the Iris relief team.

At one of the shelters in Higashi-Matsushima, we met many lovely children.
One day, after playing with them with Wii and crazy games, Dana who was on the team told them his own story of how he met Jesus. (Dana used to be a professional soccer player, and one of the boys came to him afterwards that he wanted to be a soccer player even though he had always wanted to be a swimmer... his own cute way of expressing that he was touched by Dana's story and wanted to have what Dana had...!!)
Then, Matt, another team member told everyone about the time he lost his wife... the children were all listening intently. These children had all lost something, someone in the tsunami. They had all experienced the power and terror of the earthquake and following tsunami.
That night, all 20+ children that were gathered in the music room (they were using a school as a shelter) prayed for their nightmares to stop. They all received Jesus.
Now they will no longer be crushed by the fear of, but instead they will begin to dream big dreams for their future.

We met so many children at other places too.

One shelter in Watari had 46 families staying in a gymnasium of a elementary school - families with elementary and junior high school age children.
We were told that all of the children there were on the top floor of their school building (which is no longer usable) when the tsunami hit their town. They saw it all.
The wall of water approaching and taking houses, cars, boats and people.
Everything happened in front of their eyes.

A lady at the same shelter also told me that she didn't think she would survive when the tsunami came.
She was on the higher floor of a building, but somebody told them through a loud speaker "to prepare their hearts" in case the worst happened.

To think that all the children that we were meeting there had seen such terrible thing for themselves was unbearable. Who can even begin to imagine what they are carrying in their hearts and minds?? My heart just breaks...

So then, hearing and seeing all of these things, you wonder what you can do, don't you?
These people have really lost everything. Their house, car, possessions... and what can we do for them?

But thinking about what we can do isn't helping anybody.
Just imagining how much they might be hurting isn't actually helping them, I mean,
it's easy to feel helpless and say "well I don't know if this would help them or offend them so we need to be considerate and careful",
and I'm not going to say that we understand what they are going through because we probably don't completely,
but God knows.
So we just need to be bold in communicating LOVE. Tell them with whatever we have that they are loved and precious.

So what does LOVE looks like??
It's not about bringing them what they think or recognize they need.
It's doing more and going far beyond.
Wouldn't you want to do so much more than what's necessary and enough for those you LOVE??
That's what it's about.
That's what we have learned from the Iris relief team.

How did the team communicate LOVE?
Of course we prayed for people, for healing and restoration and blessing,
but we had several mascots sing and dance for them.
We gave them a concert and cried with them.
We bought 300 pieces of Kentucky Fried Chicken (how much do you think that cost??) and shared with everyone at the shelter.
We threw a birthday party for March, April and May birthdays, and we took birthday cakes, sushi, fruit baskets, flowers and presents. And more presents.

Yes, normally most of us would look at the budget and say, "well, maybe we can do this much... no, that's probably too much, that is not necessary" or whatever.
But not the Iris team!!
They said "Let's get chicken for everyone!"
"Great! can we order 300?"
"70,000yen? Ok. Order them."
Wow.
Isn't this how God, our Father, treats us??

The team members had paid for their flight tickets and spending money themselves.
But they came because they wanted to do more. They just wanted to come and love on our people.

We have heard that the Japanese are reserved or shy, we tend to suppress our emotions, etc. etc.
And that may be true.
But still just LOVE people.

When we just LOVE, what was hard before wasn't hard any more, and we saw breakthrough.
God's LOVE was being communicated to people, into their hearts.
I will never forget what that feels like.
So simple. We don't need anything complicated when we make LOVE our focus.

Maybe this is just too simple. Maybe we are just slow to finally understand this.
But this is such a huge revelation for us.

The things that we and the church had dreamt about and prayed for,
things that were spoken over us and the church and the region through prophetic words,
they have been happening here, now.
It is so amazing.

Wherever we went,
people were touched by God's love and were in tears.
People got healed in their hearts and in their bodies.
And people just simply received Jesus into their hearts.
Every time we went out.
More than 60 people received Jesus during the time these teams were with us.

We are convinced that LOVE is the key to the hearts of Japanese.
LOVE never fails.
I am so excited.
